Pie Base Recipe


Ingredients:

  • 335 g flour
  • 15 g sugar
  • 225 g (vegan) margarine
  • 2 tbsp water
  • pinch of salt


*You can use this pie base to make our La Vida Vegan Pecan Pie.


The instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar and a pinch of salt.
  2. Add the cubes of cold margarine to the flour mixture.
  3. Knead into a cohesive dough. Make sure not to let the margarine melt too much.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of cold water and mix the dough gently.
  5. If the dough is too dry and not coming together, add extra water little by little (about a teaspoon at a time), until the dough just comes together.
  6. Form the dough into a ball, flatten it into a disc and wrap it in plastic wrap.
  7. Let the dough rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the margarine to set and make the dough easier to handle.
  8. Remove the dough from the fridge and roll it out on a lightly floured work surface until it is big enough for your cake tin.
  9. Place the rolled out dough in the pie tin, poke holes in the bottom with a fork to prevent air bubbles and use it immediately for your favourite pie filling*.
